About this place
The Domed Gateway is a striking gatehouse on the eastern side of the citadel, built in the Indo-Islamic idiom the Vijayanagara court used for many of its secular and military buildings. A high pointed archway passes beneath a chamber crowned by a large dome, with guardrooms to either side where sentries once controlled who entered the royal quarters. The plastered dome and arches contrast sharply with the trabeate (post-and-beam) stone temples elsewhere in Hampi, showing how freely the empire borrowed styles from the wider Deccan. Standing somewhat apart from the main clusters, it is a quiet, dramatic structure for those exploring the eastern edge of the site.
