About this place
South-west of Hosapete the highway stops climbing and goes straight through the hill, and on the ridge above it wind turbines turn all afternoon. It is a road rather than a destination, and that is why it is worth five minutes: the country opens out on the far side, the reservoir shows between hills, and the turbines are close enough to hear. Most people drive through it on the way to the dam without stopping. Stop on the far side where there is room to pull off, not in the tunnel or on the approach.
Good to know
Getting there: Pull off only past the tunnel, where there is a proper shoulder. Never stop inside it or on the approach — this is a fast highway and the tunnel has no verge at all.

- Best late in the afternoon, with the light behind the ridge.
- On the way between Hosapete and the dam; five minutes is enough.
