About this place
Matanga Hill is the tallest of the rocky hills that ring Hampi, offering a sweeping 360-degree panorama over the boulder-strewn landscape, the Tungabhadra river, and the temple complexes below. Named after the sage Matanga from the Ramayana, the climb is steep and rocky but rewards visitors with the finest golden-hour views in the region. A small Veerabhadra temple crowns the summit.
Good to know
Getting there: Park at the foot of the path. The pin is the summit and there is no road to it — thirty to forty minutes up over cut steps and bare rock. Going for sunrise means climbing in the dark: take a torch, and do not go alone.
- The climb uses steep, uneven granite with exposed edges and no lighting. Wear shoes with good grip and avoid the ascent during rain or full darkness.
- Allow at least 45 minutes each way, carry water and keep enough daylight for the descent.
- There are no regular shops or toilets on the summit; use facilities before beginning the climb.
