About this place

The Royal Enclosure was the fortified heart of Vijayanagara's capital, where kings held court, watched Dasara festivities and administered the empire. Massive granite perimeter walls — in places carved with elephants and horses — enclose a landscape of palace basements, administrative pavilions, aqueduct channels and lawns that now cover vanished wooden halls. The Mahanavami Dibba, a 12-metre-high ceremonial platform, dominates the centre; nearby lies the geometric stepped tank used for royal rituals, and the Hazara Rama Temple with its narrative friezes. Unlike the ticketed Zenana Enclosure to the north, most of the Royal Enclosure is open and pairs well with the Queen's Bath and the Underground Shiva Temple on its edges.
