About this place
The Double-Storeyed Mantapa rises from a broad granite outcrop on the right bank of the Tungabhadra, southwest of the Vittala Temple. Generally dated to the fifteenth or sixteenth century, the plain-pillared structure functioned as a monumental gateway on the old river route into the sacred centre. Small single-celled shrines flank the high platform, and the open upper level gives the ruin its distinctive profile among the surrounding boulders.
