About this place
Gagan Mahal stands at the centre of Anegundi, the fortified older settlement that predates Hampi across the river and later served as a seat of local chiefs. This two-storey building combines a Hindu-style base and pillared halls with Islamic-style arches and a balcony, a mix typical of Vijayanagara-era civic architecture. It served partly as a palace and partly as a ceremonial gateway to the town, and elements of it are still used by the community today. Weathered but characterful, it anchors a wander through Anegundi's lanes, temples and old gateways, giving a feel for everyday life in this living heritage village.
