About this place
Above Anegundi, on the way up towards the fort, a shelf of granite opens out over the river valley: boulders to the horizon, paddy green in the middle distance, and the Tungabhadra bending away west. Climbers know it and almost no one else does, which means that at sunset — when the Hemakuta terraces on the far bank are shoulder to shoulder — there is a fair chance of having this to yourself. It is a scramble rather than a walk for the last part, over bare rock with no railing anywhere. Carry a torch: the way down in the dark is genuinely difficult and the rock is unforgiving.
Good to know
Getting there: Park in Anegundi village and walk up towards the fort. The pin is a shelf of bare granite with no road near it and no railing anywhere — the last part is a scramble. Ask in the village for the way, and take a torch if you are staying for sunset.
- The last stretch is a scramble over bare rock with no railing and no marked path.
- Carry a torch if you stay for sunset. Coming down this in the dark without one is how people get hurt.
- Shoes with grip, not sandals. The granite is smooth and polished in places.
- No water, no shade and patchy signal. Tell somebody where you have gone.
- Do not go alone at dusk.
