About this place
The Hazara Rama Temple stood at the heart of the royal centre and served as the private chapel of the kings. Its outer walls carry friezes of royal processions, elephants, horses, and dancers, while the inner walls tell the story of the Ramayana across hundreds of carved panels, giving the temple its name ('a thousand Ramas'). Four polished black granite pillars stand inside the main hall.
Good to know
- Walk slowly around the outer walls to read the Ramayana and royal-procession reliefs; do not touch or trace the carvings.
- Shade and drinking-water points are limited in the Royal Enclosure, so carry water and sun protection.
- Combine this stop with the nearby Royal Enclosure and stepped tank to avoid repeating the exposed walk.
