About this place
Krishnadevaraya built the Krishna (Balakrishna) Temple in 1513 to celebrate his conquest of Udayagiri in the eastern Deccan, enshrining an image of the infant Krishna he brought home as war booty. The Panchayatana-plan complex has a main shrine, layered mandapas and smaller shrines, and an eastern gopuram carved with the ten avatars of Vishnu and rare narrative panels. In front stretches the long colonnaded Krishna Bazaar with a stepped tank at its centre. The sanctum is empty today, the idol now in a Chennai museum, but the yali pillars and stucco warriors still show the empire at its confident height.
