About this place
Rising across the Tungabhadra in Anegundi, Anjanadri Hill is widely believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman, born to Anjana — which gives the hill its name. A climb of roughly 575 whitewashed steps, lined with playful monkeys, leads to a small white temple to Anjaneya (Hanuman) at the summit. From the top, the reward is one of the finest panoramas in the whole region: an endless sea of golden boulders, paddy fields, coconut groves and the winding river, unforgettable at sunrise and sunset. As part of the area identified with Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom of the Ramayana, it draws both pilgrims and trekkers.
Good to know
Getting there: Park at the bottom. What the pin shows is the temple at the top of about 575 steps — there is no road up. Allow forty minutes to climb it, more in the heat, and carry water.
- The summit is reached by roughly 575 steep steps. Carry water, pace the climb and avoid the hottest part of the day.
- Monkeys are common: keep food out of sight, hold phones and bags securely, and never feed or provoke them.
- The summit shrine is active; remove footwear where directed and follow temple instructions during busy prayer times.
