About this place

The Elephant Stables are among the best-preserved secular buildings in Hampi: a long, symmetrical range of eleven large chambers, each crowned with a dome, arranged around a central pavilion. The alternating dome shapes and the Indo-Islamic styling reflect the cosmopolitan tastes of the Vijayanagara court. Each chamber could hold one or two elephants, with openings above once used to chain and feed them.

Good to know

  • Keep your Zenana Enclosure ticket: it normally covers this heritage zone and may cover other ASI sites on the same day; confirm current validity at the counter.
  • The small archaeological galleries in the nearby Guards' Quarters are easy to miss and are worth checking while they are open.
  • Do not climb on the stable platforms or enter any area closed by ASI barriers.
